    The Throw (video help)

For ages and ages man has had fun with gravity. Getting something into the air and catching, hitting, or altering it before it hits the ground has been the make-up of many (if not most) sports and leisure activities. Nothing competes with the diabolo because you do it all yourself. Randy Moss can run and catch but I’d like to see him throw the ball 50 yards to himself and catch it. That’s what we’re going to do right now.

As with all types of juggling, the throw is much more important than the catch. The throw keeps you in control of the object(s). Try to throw the diabolo straight up into the air so that you don’t have to move to catch it. Here’s how to do it.

Let’s review. You use your arms to make it spin. You have the diabolo spinning steadily and it’s not tilting forward or backward, and you’re standing right in front of it. Before throwing, you have to change your hand position by rotating your hands to the position seen in Figure 1. By pointing the sticks at each other, the diabolo and the sticks have created a plane which causes the diabolo to travel straight into the air.

To throw, you primarily use your wrists. To learn properly, you should practice by not moving your arms at all. So what you do is change from your spin position to throw position. I sometimes call throw position “Superman Position” because you have your arms in front, hands like fists, just like Superman when he flies. Now to throw, all you have to do is bring the two sticks from pointing at each other horizontally, to pointing upwards until the string

is tight. The faster you twist your wrists up, the higher it goes (see video 1). Video 2 shows the height you can get with a small diabolo and by using your arms and body as well. Don’t use your arms until you are able to throw straight up and catch it consistently using only your wrists.
